Algeria appoints new first team coach

Writer/Ed.: Oladayo Juan Joe Bamidele

Algerian Soccer Federation (FAF) has on Friday appointed Belgian, Georges Leekens, 67, as head coach of the national first team side until the end of 2019 African Nations Cup.

This will be the second time Leekens will be leading the team after a six months spell in 2003.

FAF posted a statement on its official website on Thursday confirming the appointment of Leekens.

Leekens only has two weeks in preparation for a crucial game against Nigeria in the second game of 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

The Belgian is also tasked with leading the Desert Foxes to the 2017 AFCON semifinals. As many expect him to win the cup, considering his talented squad, with Leicester City duo Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani.

Algeria only won the African Cup at home in 1990.

WRITER'S OPINION

Great appointment!

African nations these days are indeed going for international coaches. It's never a problem so far they are performing brilliantly.
